TOURISM

There's a lot to see and do around Parma...Here's a few ideas!  Read on for info on the top attractions in town, the surrounding areas and further a field.

Parma's Neighborhoods

Parma is more or less divided in two by the River Parma which runs north-south through the center. To the east, you have the Centro Storico with museums, monuments, busy shopping streets and lively piazzas. Here you can find Piazza Garibaldi, the Duomo and the Pilotta as well as major shopping streets like Via Farini, Via Cavour and Via Giacomo.

Oltretorrente, the University districtlies to the west of the River Parma and is very down-to-earth. It's popular with younger people for its lively bars, restaurants and artistic spirit. Here you can find Parco Ducale, the Church of Santa Croce and Via Della Salute with its brightly colored houses. Also the Lungo Parma, a trail that takes you along the river bed.

Cittadellahome to the park that gives it its name, is a quiet leafy neighborhood that is popular with families. There's not a lot of action over here, but the park is well worth the visit if you are in Parma with children or you want to squeeze in a run.

San Lazzaro is the residential district, located in the eastern part of Parma and not far from the city centre. It continues to grow with cocktail bars, shops, and restaurants,  mainly clustered along Via Emilia Est.

Campus is another neighbourhood south of the city centre. Campus is home to Parma University and sits just outside the tangenziale (ring road around Parma). In addition to many University students, you can find the Scuola per L'Europa, many sports facilities and a shopping area with some restaurants, a cinema and large supermarkets.

The Fiere di Parma district is an area north of Parma that comes alive during the many trade shows it hosts. Not particulary interesting on its own, this area is surrounded by fields and other office campuses, but the Fiere holds massive industry events including Cibus, a food fair, Mercante, a furniture fair, and even a show dedicated to RVs.

Surrounding Areas

Heading Southeast from Parma toward Collechio, you can find some nice hiking and mountain biking in the Boschi di Carrega. There are a couple of restaurants within the Boschi - one of our favorites is Punto Verde for casual, outdoor dining that is perfect for families with little kids.

Heading South from Parma toward Langhirano you will find Torrechiara castle.  The castle itself is a beautiful place to visit and the surrounding village has some charming restaurants. There are some nice walking trails with beautiful vinyard views and sculptures along the way.

Keep going south to Lago Santo  where you will find beautiful and more challenging hiking. This area is known for chestnuts  and mushroom picking, as well as for camping and hiking.

For great shopping, head west to Fidenza Village where you can find outlets for many popular brands from luxury to the more casual.
