Hi,
I’m Alice, born and raised in Parma, where I spent most of my childhood. However, I had the amazing opportunity to live in the UK for 12 years. After the pandemic, my husband and I decided to return to our hometown, close to family.
Even though Parma was always “home” for us, moving back felt like starting over in a new place.
Returning as a family of three—with our 3-year-old son—meant rediscovering Parma as adults and not kids. We had to navigate Italy’s complex bureaucratic system, which was overwhelming and quite a shock at first.
Thankfully, social media connected us with other families, and we’ve made some great new friends. Sharing experiences, advice, and mutual support has been invaluable. Our son, who initially struggled with the Italian language, has now settled into a wonderful school where he’s also able to speak English.
As I adjusted to life back in Parma, I realized how vulnerable you can feel moving to a new country with a family. As a professional midwife, this inspired me to find ways to support other mums and mums-to-be. That’s why I started offering antenatal classes and baby massage sessions for English-speaking families.
Overall, Parma has grown more multicultural since we left, which made our transition from British life much easier.
